Horsethief Falls and Pancake Rocks

Saturday, July 11,2009

We hiked the Horsethief trail today. Trail number 705 just past Divide. The trail head/parking lot area is located at an abandoned railroad tunnel. The beginning of the trail is an old wagon road.

Very nice shady trail. The trail to Horsethief Falls is an easy 3 miles round trip. Once you get to the falls, enjoy exploring around the area.

The trail to Pancake Rocks is a moderate 6.25 mile round-trip hike. The elevation gain is 1,400 feet. The Pancake Rocks are granite rocks worn to resemble pancakes.

At the top of the Pancake Rocks the views of Cripple Creek and Sangre de Cristo Mountains are amazing.

My husband and 2 teenagers made it to the Pancake rocks, however my 7 year old attempted the climb, but could only make it about 3/4 a mile up the trail toward Pancake rocks. We both then headed back down, then took the trail to the Horsethief Falls. We were able to explore and have a snack and rest while waiting for the boys to return.

Happy Hiking!
